Glutathione Therapy - An Interview with Dr Perlmutter

Here Glutathione therapy is explained by the doctor who pioneered the treatment.

Glutathione therapy is inexpensive, safe and can dramatically improve functioning for patients with Parkinson’s Disease. It is a treatment that sounds too good to be true, but there is no questioning the impressive results. Doctors all over the world are becoming believers in the benefits of glutathione thanks to the work of our special guest, Dr. David Perlmutter.

Jill: Thanks for taking the time to visit with me about glutathione therapy, Dr. Perlmutter. Your work is generating a lot of excitement in the PD community. How does glutathione work?

Dr. Perlmutter: A better question might be, “Why is it useful?” It’s now recognized that the main pathologic event in Parkinson’s Disease or any other neurologic disorder is the destruction of neurons by free radicals, so anything that limits free radicals is important. The primary role of glutathione is not necessarily in preventing symptoms, but in slowing the disease by limiting free radicals. Glutathione is a free radical scavenger, so regardless of whether it helps patients symptomatically, day-to-day, it is still something that should be considered.

Jill: But is it true that people who try the therapy are seeing significant improvement in their symptoms?

Dr. Perlmutter: Eighty to ninety percent improve dramatically. It’s felt that the mechanism that allows it to work is in increasing the sensitivity to certain receptors to dopamine. Glutathione doesn’t raise dopamine levels, but it allows the dopamine in the brain to be more effective. That’s not a new idea in medicine. Diabetic drugs work not by increasing insulin, but by increasing the receptors to insulin. Glutathione not only increases sensitivity to dopamine, but also to serotonin, which may explain why many of our depressed PD patients have a remarkable improvement.

Jill: Describe the standard glutathione treatment regimen.

Dr. Perlmutter: We’ve been using glutathione for three years and have steadily increased our dosage. Now our standard dosage is 1400 milligrams mixed with saline and given intraveneously for ten minutes three times a week. We were recently visited by the National Parkinson Foundation and they’re very excited — to the extent they are going to comission a large double-blind study evaluation short- and long-term effectiveness.

Jill: Can patients take glutathione in pill form instead of through an IV?

Dr. Perlmutter: Glutathione must be given via IV. It’s digested very rapidly when given orally. Intramuscular injections are somewhat effective, but it’s minimal. Also included in our treatment is the amino acid N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC). The use of milk thistle has been shown to cause retention of glutathione, so it is part of our program.

Jill: Does gluathione replace a patient’s current PD medications?

Dr. Perlmutter: Often times the patient’s symptoms improve so significantly, we are able to decrease, sometimes significantly, the amount of medication they require. This is important because there are some side effects with those medications. Levodopa increases the level of homocysteine in the body and increases the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Jill: So many treatments seem only to benefit recently-diagnosed patients. Is that true with glutathione therapy?

Dr. Perlmutter: Everybody gets some benefit. We have treated some patients at end-stage who are wheelchair-bound and unable to speak and they have shown some very obvious and notable improvement. Their degree of improvement will obviously be less than someone in an earlier stage of the disease.

Jill: Are there any side effects associated with the treatment?

Dr. Perlmutter: There are no significant side effects. Also, the cost is exceedingly low: $1.00 for every 100 milligrams and it’s often covered by insurance. Family members can even perform the treatment once provided instruction. I do caution other doctors not to mix glutathione with anything but normal saline. Other practitioners might want to mix it with vitamin C, but vitamin C renders glutathione useless by causing it to oxidize. Since glutahione increases the ability of the liver to process chemicals, there’s possibility that glutathione administration might render chemotherapy less effective.

Jill: How long can someone continue with glutathione therapy?

Dr. Perlmutter: Permanently.

Jill: Is glutathione gaining acceptance in the medical community?

Dr. Perlmutter: I lecture nationally probably ten to twelve times a year and I always ask how many doctors are using it. Probably at least ten to twenty percent of the audience raises their hand. The others are waiting for peer review validation. Glutathione is already an FDA-approved product.

Jill: What lead you to the discovery of glutathione’s effectiveness as a treatment for Parkinson’s?

Dr. Perlmutter: There were articles appearing in our journals noting that the brain of PD patients were deficient in glutathione. We’ve known since 1950 they were deficient in dopamine. Once we realized they were also deficient in glutathione, we saw the potential.

Jill: How many patients are receiving this treatment?

Dr. Perlmutter: Probably several thousand, easily.

Jill: And is the treatment uncomfortable?

Dr. Perlmutter: Not at all. I’ve had it myself many times.

Jill: Is glutathione therapy used to treat any other conditions besides PD?

Dr. Perlmutter: It’s been very effective in treating irritable bowel syndrome, and I don’t have a clue why. We use it to treat all neurodegenerative symptoms, but it is also part of our treatment for fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Jill: Do patients need to go to your health center in Florida to receive this treatment?

Dr. Perlmutter: No. I have an instructional videotape Glutathione Therapy in Parkinson’s Disease DVD available on my website and I receive six or eight phone calls every day from doctors around the country. I’m happy to work with them. It’s something any physician can do in his or her office and ultimately, the patients or their families can learn to do it at home.

thanks for sharing

Very interesting! Thanks very much!

After hearing about an alternative treatment for Parkinson’s Disease, I drove my father 3 hours to Naples, Florida to meet with Dr. First Name? Perlmutter. My father was diagnosed in 1991 with “MSA” (Multi System Atrophe”), a Parkinsonism Disease. We met Dr. Perlmutter in his office and my father and I explained his diagnosis and symptoms. Dr. Perlmutter reviewed Dad’s vitamin and medication schedule and told us a single injection of ‘Glutathione’ would help. We agreed to the injection and the doctor then asked my father to sign a video release to shoot “before” and “after” footage. He gave the injection and I couldn’t believe my eyes. My father was walking, his stiffness gone and facial expression relaxed. The transformation was a miracle. Suddenly we had renewed hope, and my father and I left the office smiling and giggling like children. This was a great day.

We had high expectations when we received our first shipment of ‘Glutathione’. We gave the first injection and waited for the medicine to take effect. We desperately wanted to see the same results we’d experienced in Dr. Perlmutter’s office, but instead were disappointed. There was no change in my father’s condition at all. Puzzled, we called Dr. Perlmutter’s office hoping for an explanation or solution. Dr. Perlmutter told us not to come up with any “early” conclusions and to finish the month’s supply of injections as planned.

We finished the first month of treatment but were never able to reproduce the results we saw on that first visit to the doctor’s office. In fact we never saw any change in my father’s condition at all. When I informed Dr. Perlmutter about this, his answer was “Then stop taking it”. I was surprised. All we wanted was to repeat the same remarkable results we’d had the first time. We were disappointed and frustrated by the doctor’s inadequate response.

After doing some more research we discovered there was a big problem with our ‘Glutathione’ Therapy plan. Glutathione loses its effectiveness after being exposed to room temperature for more than six hours. The shipments we received from Dr. Perlmutter’s source were not temperature controlled, so we called Dr. Perlmutters office to share our discovery. Dr. Perlmutter asked his source to re-issue another batch. When the new shipment arrived we quickly looked through the box to see if the ‘Glutathione’ was packed correctly. We found the ice pack melted and the ‘Glutathione’ bottle at room temperature. Since we had no idea whether or not the medicine was still good, we called Dr. Perlmutters office and were told to “try it anyway.” We continued the treatment and finished out the month. But even though we’d followed all Dr. Perlmutter’s instructions to the letter, we still didn’t see improvement. We’d had no “Miracle Day” as before.

By now, over two months had passed since our first visit, and we were frustrated. We could either try again or give up. I called Dr. Perlmutter’s office once more and left a message asking him to call me. He returned my call the next day. I voiced my concerns regarding the lack of protocol ensuring the preservation of the ‘Glutathione’, to which Dr. Perlmutter replied that he was not responsible for shipping. I tried to clarify: wasn’t the preservation of the ‘Glutathione’ integral to the treatment’s success? Shouldn’t there be a shipping protocol in place, or at least a home test to see if the medication was usable? I suggested my father and I make the three hour trip to his office for a second time. I really wanted to duplicate the great results we’d had before, but Dr. Perlmutter did not agree. “He may not get the same results as the first time,” was his response.

I began to wonder if Dr. Perlmutter had deceived us, and I tried to clarify his statement that he would not be responsible for proper shipping of ‘Glutathione’. But Dr. Perlmutter would not comment on this again. “I will call the Wellness Pharmacy and make them aware of this,” he told me. I then researched The Wellness Pharmacy and discovered they have an interest in the sale of ‘Glutathione’ as well. In fact, The Wellness Pharmacy and Dr. Perlmutter are practically business partners, each having a stake in the distribution of ‘Glutathione’, and standing to profit from its sale.

I was now suspicious: why the mystery and secrecy about ‘Glutathione’? Why didn’t Dr. Perlmutter make a responsible effort to have the medicine properly shipped? He seemed to have no protocol whatsoever, and no accountability for his failures. There were too many holes. I searched Dr. Perlmutter’s name on the Internet and found that 90% of the articles about him are self-created or backed by someone profiting from the sale of ‘Glutathione’. I read Dr. Perlmutter’s book, “The Better Brain Book”, in which he claims there are over 1,000 other doctors using ‘Liquid Glutathione Therapy’ to treat Parkinson’s Disease. The book provides a phone number that can be called to verify Dr. Perlmutter’s claims, but even that was useless. The number was disconnected when I called.

As for the cost: Dr. Perlmutter charged me almost $1,100.00 for the office visit, which included a 15 minute interview and a shot of what we believed to be Glutathione. Including everything from the liquid to having the shots administered, the bill thereafter comes to about $700.00 a month. We’ll probably never know what was in that first shot, or what was in the boxes Dr. Perlmutter shipped to us. I caution anyone considering this treatment to take a closer look.

Hello, I am Meadina Cruz, a medical doctor from the Philippines, I have a 59 year old sister with diabetes and parkinsons disease. Where can I get a hold of Dr. Perlmutter because I need to get a consultation for her. Please advise as soon as you can due to my limited time in the U.S.

- Thank You.

Wow ! I have read so much on the Internet about Glutathione Therapy Treatment for Parkinson’s Disease and I must admit that there really is nothing to substantiate that this treatment works. It’s unfortunate that doctors are allowed to say or claim almost anything they want because the Internet is not policed by any authorities. However, I did come across some credible information that can be found by going to the AMA (American Medical Association) website and searching for “Clinical Trials For Glutathione Therapy Fpr Parkinson’s”, or go to the USF (University Of Florida) website and also search for “Glutathione Therapy For Parkinson’s Patients”. The best way to fight against all the bad information on the Internet is to find and share all the good, documented information that is available if you look hard enough. Doctors like Dr. Perlmutter (if what I have read is true) should be exposed for what they are doing. It’s a shame !

I wonder if there are any documented cases of Glutathione Therapy treatments we can refer to ?
